Cross Countra Skiing near Rohr im Gebirge 1.2.2010

Semester break for the kids, with a week´s holiday. The children are attending a skiing course at the tiny skiing centre around Furtner inn, 5 km outside Rohr im Gebirge. There are two drag lifts with a few nice ski runs, but using those short slopes whole day is not so promising. So I also took with me the cross country skis and started to explore the cross country ski run to Rohr im Gebirge, despite 15 cm of new powdery snow, using the shorter "adventure" skis.

Lots of fresh snow in the forest, ...

... which is going to be blown down from the trees by the wind.

Still lots ...

... of snow on the trees.

The run has not been groomed yet after snowing, ...

... but 15 cm are not as much, new tracks are easy drawn.

Wind drift

Repeatedly, the road has nice curves ...

... and finally leads you to the head of the valley, where a connective run to the runs around Rohr starts. This connective run is already prepared..

The connective run leads to the broad valley floor of Rohr with its runs. Afar is the preparing machine with a big snow drift around. First houses of Rohr.

The run is crossing a beck.

Arrived in Rohr.

On the way back on the connection run I pass huge cornices ...

... and over a small saddle back to Furtner´s inn.

In the afternoon we meet our friends in Rohr for some coffee, the kids are enjoying the company and are playing together.

Suddenly, the wind starts here ...

... and is drifting the fine, powdery snow, ...

... and blows it from the roof.

After a few minutes, everything is gone, leaving droplets of water on the foto lenses which hve to be cleaned.

A short stroll around the house ...

Behind these rocks in the next valley are the Furtner lifts.

Icycles on the roof, ...

... nearly hinging down to the ground.
