2.2.2014 - Skiing on the Rittisberg

Today, we start the day a bit unhurried. After a good and long breakfast, we drive the short way up to the small skiing centre at the Rittisberg, where we use a 2 1/2 hourīs ticket for late morning skiing.

In the morning I have a look out of the roof window of our room - to immediately jump for the camera. Sunrise over the Scheichenspitze ...

... ans a bit later: the Dachstein, a bit unwrapped today. The clear air and the characteristic shape of the clouds however sow another foen weather day.

Dachstein and Scheichenspitze.

Short visit to the cross country ski run: more foen clouds collecting on the Dachstein  ...

In the opposite direction: the main Alpine ridge like yesterday - in clouds.

First time we take the smooth "family downhill", ...

... second time we change to the cable lift. Gorgeous view to the Niedere Tauern from here ...

... and a perfectly displayed foen weather situation.

All three ski centres of Schladming in one view: Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm (from left to right).

Dachstein once more in clouds ...

 ...  but not permanently.

Rittisberg - cable lift and the Niedere Tauern. The characteristic lentiform clouds can be seen now, staying constantly in a certain distance from the main Alpine ridge.

These lentiform clouds are formed as a consequence of a standing wave - the air that streams over the main Alpine ridge begins to swing up and down in a wave-like way. At the wave crest, moisture is condensing in the upstreaming air thus forming the cloud.

A short while of nearly free Dachstein summit ...

In the afternoon, I start for a whole round trip around the Kulmberg, about 10 km. As the camera bag is hindering at this large distance, there are no pictures. Doesīnt matter however, because we took the same route (in opposite direction) on our sleigh trip on the departure day - so look there for the pictures.

3.2.2014. I have to admit, that I did estimate the weather in a completely wrong way. Dense fog and a bit of new snow in the morning made me leave the camera home at our ski day on the Hochwurzen. A big mistake, because after a short time, the weather turned like yesterday - foen like and sunny. So, there are only these three pictures which I made after our return to the hotel. Ground fog over the Enns valley ...

And one more breathtaking sunset over the Dachstein massive.
