Dreistetten - Hohe Wand 20.1.2007

After the winter gale "Kyrill" has passed by the night between 18.1. and 19. 1. (good luck, no devastetion in my surrounding), an the second day after the sun came out in the early afternoon. A really good opportunity to do a short afternoon walk, the temperature still extremely mild (12 C in the valleys, of course a bit less on the tops). I drive to Dreistetten and walk up the northeastern end of the Hohe Wand ridge.

Last houses of Dreistetten

Light tree population above the outskirts of the village ...

 ... and a small chapel.

From a bit more above: Dreistetten, ruin Starhemberg to the far left

Still narrow streaks of light ...

... on the trees on the foot of Hohe Wand, ...

... soon they will stand in shadow.

Dreistetten, ...

... and the southern Wiener Becken ("Vienna´s plain")´behind.

Walking further through the forest there is a viewplace where you see the city of Vienna, ...

... and the deep dale of the Piesting.

At least arrived at the end of the high plateau, just in due time before sunset.A sunbeam is casting its light into dense forest ...

 ... enlightening a fir tree.

The sun attracts me to the outskirts.

Outside! Sheila looks as if she was burning ...

... but this is only the low streak of light. The outskirts of the forest where I have come from, seen from the opposite side..

Brushes on the  plateau...

 ... and meagre pasture land.

Larches are growing in the evening sun.

Atfer a short walk a bit down to the small hut named Herrgottschnitzerhaus there is a stunning round view from the southern outskirts of the city of Vienna ...

 ... to Muthmannsdorf, ...

 ... Wiener Neustadt ...

... and the Prosset - gorge with ruin Emmerberg being its guard. The village in behind is not Winzendorf, but Saubersdorf.

Panoramic view from Herrgottschnitzerhaus: Vienna far left on the horizon, then the villages of Piesting and Dreistetten in shadow, Muthmannsdorf still in sunshine, behind in between Wiener Neustadt. Click into the image for a larger version.

Far left is Muthmannsdorf and Fischauer mountains with Grössenberg behind, then the southern Wiener Becken behind with the plain pine forest. Due to the low layer of dust the Rosalia mountains in behind seem to "hover in the air".

The road over Kuerassier in shadow, behind are the northern outskirts of Wiener Neustadt and the Leitha mountains with the limestone quarry of Loretto.

A last glimpse on Muthmannsdorf, only minutes before the sunlight gave place for evening´s shadows.
