4.6.2014: Orchid grasslands near Furth and Neusiedl

A hint for orchid occurence near Furth an der Triesting motivates me to a short walk in this area, which I don´t know at all.

I do a short round walk south from the small village of Furth.

A pretty hilly landscape View back to Furth. On this grassland, a bit further up, ...

... I find dozens of torchids. A bit alarming is the fact that they nearly disappear in the high grass. Is there manuring recently? If this is the case, these beautiful flowers would disappear in a few years. Common spotted orchid (dactylorhiza fuchsii) in violet and nearly white.

Fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea)

Meadow salsify (Tragopogon pratensis)

Beautiful grassland.

Thistle with visitor.

Cotton grass (Eriophorum latifolium) in a wet place.

Once more two very light exemplars of Common spotted orchid (dactylorhiza fuchsii)

Cotton grass (Eriophorum latifolium) in another wet place.

In a paddock, huge lots of margerites are in bloom. Seems like the horses do not like them.

Carefully, I would suggest this beetle to be a great capricorn beetle (Cerambyx cerdo).

Fern-leave dropwort (Filipendula vulgaris)

bell flower

At the farm called "Amöd" I admire this wonderful clematis.

Even more beautiful in the semi-feral veg garden close to the old decayed house, dame´s rockets (Hesperis matronalis).

I walk down the other side of the hill to the next valley (in the background the "Steinwand", which translated means "stone wall"), ...

... to return back to Furth around the "Ruhberg". zurückzukehren. En route at the "Lichtensperg" this belated oilseed rape field.

Back to Furth, I enter my car and drive over the pass called "Hals" to Pernitz and Neusiedl to see a grassland called "Quellenwiese", which I have found earlier. Here, several orchid species are growing. This is the lesser butterfly orchid (Platantera bifolia).

Meadow sage (Salvia pratensis)

Fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea)

Once more lesser butterfly orchids (Platantera bifolia)

Early purple orchids (Orchis mascula subspecies signifera) are growing here in the shadow of small bushes. Maybe the last summer was too hot with several weeks of temperatures up to 35 or even 40 °C.

Lesser butterfly orchid (Platantera bifolia)

Fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea)

On the drive back, I have to stop near Pernitz to admire this poppy field.
