Spring flowers on eastern edge of Alps 15.4.2005

In the meantime spring has come with first snall leaves on some trees and bushes. Blackthorn flourishes near roads - an unmistakable sign for the blossom of those tiny, multicoloured iris that flourish on a few, privileged places. I have to see that hidden place, a meadow near Bad Fischau/Brunn, with thousands of those tiny iris flourishing in several different colours

At first, however, a little walk through my garden: Magnolia ...

... forsithia ...

 ... and grape hyacinth

I start with the mountain bike for that meadow. On the way my sign: Flourishing blackthorn near the road leading from Winzendorf to Bad Fischau/Brunn through meadows, fields and vineyards.

On the way a small place with lots of lesser celandine

Here it is, "my" meadow: Tiny Iris (Iris pumila) are growing here in the basic colours  white, yellow and blue/magenta, however, due to permanent hybridiziation a lot of different hues and nuances are the result. As the plants grow aside with their rootstocks there are places with dozens of blossoms of the same colour. Very old plants, however, die in the middle of the area thus resulting in a fairy - ring like arrangement of  blossoms, like fungi.

Claret red and different magenta variants, ...

... like these, shining beautifully in backlight

yellow ...

 ... and a few white ones ...

 ... more blue examples...

... There is even an example of white blossom with small parts of magenta

Seems like well tasting to the ants ...

All together a beautiful variegated Mix.

However, there are other spring flowers: Alyssum montanum

and Thlaspi perfoliatum, growing in the light pine forest

On another place, near the road shortly before the first houses of Brunn, lots of Adonis vernalis are growing in the light black-pine forest.
