Bicycle tour Bad Fischau 8.6.2015

A bright and hot day. I take the mountain bike to head for Bad Fischau to see if the lizard orchids are out.

The iris grassland is totally different to its appearance two months ago.

Jetzt blühen Viper's Bugloss or Blueweed (Echium vulgare) and Schmalblättriger Lein (Linum tenuifolium)

Broomrape (Orobanche) and Narrow leaved grape-hyacinth (Muscari tenuiflorum).

Carthusian Pink (Dianthus carthusianorum),

Wild Roses

A False oil beetle (Oederma nobilis). Thanks to A. Hempel for identification!

Today´s great attraction, however, is the Adriatic Lizard orchid (Himantoglossum adriaticum); some even are growing inmidst the grassland.

Lots of Schmalblättriger Lein (Linum tenuifolium).

Two months ago, there were lots of tiny iris flowering. Today, you get lots of ...

Felsen Goldlack (Erysimum sylvestre).

This is the dam of the first Vienna´s aquaeduct. Nobody can explain to me, why this place is mowed as early as June. There would be lots of rare plants that would grow here - provided it is mowed later. To mow in August also would prevent growth of bushes. For example ...

Adriatic Lizard orchid (Himantoglossum adriaticum) growing close nearby the mowed area and the bushes. I also found lizard orchids on the bank in the past, but there they are mowed and cannot settle.

Shortly before Winzendorf, I have to stop to admire this poppy field.

field poppy (Papaver rhoeas) and ...
