Rosalia mountains 12.10.2008

Herwig Giesswein has invited me to a walk from his home village Sauerbrunn along the Rosalia mountains. After some discussion about possible morning fog and a view on the Schneeberg web cams we start at 8:30 a.m. from the armory of the local fire brigade and walk up the smooth, nearly completely forested ridge of the Rosalia mountains up to the Rosalia chapel (which gave the name to the ridge) at about 748 m.

As forecast the day begins with dense ground fog.

First glimpse of sun after already half an hour ...

... and views to first sun rays.

Everthing now looks ...

 ... so different.

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) - really flowrishes late in the year.

Further on through the forest ...

A first view over the cloud inversion.

Grass - seeds

This beech leaf just has put its place on those seeds - proving absolute quietness, no wind.

Now up the narrow pass.

Suddenly, the view is cleared. What did not enjoy lumberjacks - trees having fallen down in huge gales - emjoys now us to provide us an unexpected view over the cloud inversion.

Schneeberg. Only few snow is left from last snowing, being much too warm recently.

View over the cloud inversion to Hohe Wand. In front of it to the right are the highest peaks of Fischauer mountains.

View to Bucklige Welt and Wechsel.

Some trees have survived. The view should even be better behind. So I take the short detour while Herwig is waiting.

Schneeberg

The prominent cone to the left is Sonnwendstein, Heukuppe of the Raxmassiv to the right.

Semmering and Rax over the sea of clouds.

Rax, Schneeberg, now seen from near the Rosalia chapel.

Rax to the right, left of it behind should be Schneealm.

On the opposite side there is a stunning view over the clouds ...

... covering northern Burgenland. Click here or into the picture for a larger verison.

Forchtenstein castle just popping out of the fog.
